You’ll Never Know

As long as you are smiling.
This sadness is something I'll just have to bear.
A bit of everyday my heart starts to tear.
As long as you are smiling, I'll keep smiling.
Pretending as if there was nothing there.
This loneliness is something familiar I'll learn how to wear.

“loneliness is something familiar I’ll learn how to wear” Yes. Like an itchy t-shirt that is itchy till you have worn it plent of times and then washed it plenty of times.

Definitely one of the hardest things to deal with. You captured it perfectly.

I believe that it was Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote that when something is so closely felt it should be written in a form to contain that extraneous emotion, and I think this is a good example of that. Also, I appreciate that the language chosen by the poet isn’t too lofty for the content. The idea of “wearing loneliness” seems, at first, shop-worn, but I think it is the message you deliver about loneliness or what the voice of the poem is trying to convey which makes it your own.
